8 Killer Live Auction Tips

8 Killer Live Auction Tips

The Best Tips for Buyers & Sellers

Live auctions are a fantastic way to buy and sell equipment, machinery, and even real estate. There is little hassle involved and you don’t have to worry about negotiating with either the buyer or the seller. Plus, live auctions are a lot of fun to attend and participate in! Regardless if you are the buyer or the seller, you are going to want to do everything you can to make sure you leave the auction with the results you hoped for. We’ve come up with a list of four tips for buyers and four tips for sellers to make sure that you get the most out of your live auction experience.

Buyers

1. Arrive Early

Make sure that you get to an auction before the bidding is technically scheduled to start. This will give you time to register (if you haven’t already) and inspect the items you plan to bid on. Having another chance to look at them will confirm your decision to bid and will help you gage how much you want to pay for them. Getting there early will also let you watch a few lots and get a good idea of the process before you jump into the bidding yourself.

2. Know What You Are Looking For

Before you jump into a live auction it’s a good idea to know what you are looking to buy. Read through the auction catalog to find the specific items that you plan to bid on so that you aren’t overwhelmed walking into the full auction. There will be a lot going on and it can be extremely difficult to decide

get there early

what items you want if you don’t know everything that is up for auction. This will also help you from feeling like you missed out bidding on a great item that you didn’t realize was available. Of course, you can always change your mind and bid on a lot you weren’t planning for, but planning ahead will help you make sure that you bid on all of the items that you want.

3. Be Fast and Confident

When you decide that you want to bid on an item, you must be fast and confident. It’s essential to understand that once you have placed a bid you can’t back out. Of course, if you are outbid on an item, you don’t have to bid again unless you want to win that lot. You also want to be fast during the bidding process. Certain auction lots can be sold extremely fast so be sure that you take the chance to counterbid as soon as you can.

4. Have Fun

Auctions are a blast to participate in! You want to make sure that you enjoy yourself and have fun throughout the whole process. You can get some awesome equipment for a great price, engage in competitive banter, and feel a huge adrenaline rush when you finally win the item you’ve been fighting for. Check out some of our upcoming auctions here.

Sellers

1. Present You Items Well

One of the best things you can do for your auction is present your items in their best condition. You want your items to look the best that they can be both in person and in the auction catalog photos that we take so that bidders can see the equipment’s true value when they are deciding how much they want to bid. For example, your equipment is probably pretty dirty from being used in the field or on the road. While you know that it works great, bidders won’t know that and could place a lower value on your assets. We would also recommend performing general maintenance on your items to fix up and small things that might deter bidders. Even a few small fixes on an item can drastically increase its selling price.

2. Promote Your Auction

The best way for you to have a successful auction is to reach a lot of people

present your items well

The best way for you to have a successful auction is to reach a lot of people who are likely to want the items that you are selling. Once you know when your auction will be, do everything that you can to market your live auction. Contact your clients or send out a newsletter to inform people of your upcoming event. Create a social media campaign and post about all the items that are up for auction, information about your event, and share any posts that we put out in our marketing campaigns. You can also create an event to invite your friends to on Facebook that will let people RSVP and give you a good idea of how many people will be coming. You can also reach out to other individuals or companies in your industry to let them know you will be auctioning off items that they might be interested in. The more people that attend, the more likely your final bidding prices will be higher.

3. Plan the Flow of Your Auction

In order for your auction to be both entertaining and successful you will want to make sure that there is a schedule to your event. This will be something that your auctioneer will be able to help you with (see point 4.). You want to make sure that you sell your items in the right order so that you can bring in the highest profits possible and keep your event entertaining. Starting off your event with some lowball items will get your bidders warmed up and will build anticipation for the larger assets. This will help you put your bidders at ease and will make them comfortable to start bidding higher amounts.

4. Work with A Professional Auctioneer

If you want to hold a live auction you will want to hire a professional auctioneer like us here at Miedema Auctioneering! What is a sealed-bid auction?

The majority of the auctions that we conduct are live or online auctions. If you’ve been around with us for awhile you are probably pretty used to that environment. So, we wanted to give a short explanation for a sealed-bid auction. Essentially, each bidder submits what they are willing to pay for the assets and whoever offered the most money will win. It’s still considered an auction, but buyers don’t have the opportunity to bid back and forth against each other or see what other individuals are bidding.

If you have any further questions about the auction or would like to inquire about our other auctions, please contact us here. Happy Bidding!

4 Simple Questions to Ask When Hiring an Auctioneer

Questions to Ask When Hiring an Auctioneer

4 Simple Questions to Ask When Hiring an Auctioneer

If it’s time to hire an auctioneer for your event, or sale, the task might seem overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be! How do you choose the right auctioneer? Someone that you can trust to sell your items with the highest integrity and trustworthiness? Although there is no recipe for success, there are definitely things that you can do and questions that you can ask before hiring an auctioneer for your event, sale, or charity. When it comes to considering an auctioneer for your project, we would encourage you to meet with them if you can and ask for them to take their credentials as well as ask them some of the following questions.

Questions For Your Auctioneer

Do You Offer Consultation Time As A Part Of Your Service?

A consultation can benefit your auction sale greatly – taking the time to sit down and talk about all of the various details of your event or sale will help you know what to expect from the day as well as what you need to expect from the auctioneer and auction company that you work with. Many auction companies such as Miedema Auctioneering offer a free consultation as you prepare for your sale, event, or charity auction. Other companies might charge extra and you could end up paying more than you’d like to get the information you need to make your auction a success.

What Other Events Have You Worked? Do You Have Any Videos From Them?

Asking your prospective auctioneer what other events they have worked will help you gain insight into what they have the most experience in. You might be searching for an auctioneer to head up your charity auction, then you might not want to hire someone who only has experience in livestock or estate sale auctions. Seeing a video is even better! This will show you how they conduct them self as well as how they interact with the bidders and crowd. There are many auction companies that have experience across the board when it comes to live events, but it’s important to be sure that you are getting the right fit for your event, so just ask the question!

Do You Have Any References Available?

References, references, references, we cannot say it enough. Ask for them! References will help you see other peoples experience with the auctioneer and will help you gain insight into who they are and what they value in the selling process. You want to make sure that you and your auctioneer are on the same page as far as your goals go, and finding someone who can talk to you about the auctioneer you are hoping to hire can be so helpful in finding someone that fits what you are looking for.

Are There Any Other Vendors That You Can Recommend That Might Be Helpful?

When you hire an auctioneer, you are hiring their services but also hiring their experience! If the auctioneer that you are looking into hiring has been in the

hiring an auctioneer

industry for a while, the chances are that they know pretty well what they are doing. They might have other vendors that they have worked with before to create a smashing successful event. Ask them what other vendors they have worked with, what was that like and how did it affect the sale.

We hope that you will go into the hiring process a little more aware of what to ask your prospective auctioneer before you hire them! Make sure that you remember that Auctioneers are there to help you make the most of your event and sale – your success is their success. If you are looking for an auctioneer to help you with an upcoming live auction, please contact us today. One of our representatives would be more than happy to help you!

4 Ways to Maximize Profits for Your Live Auction

4 Ways to Maximize Profits for Your Live Auction

Getting the most out of your auction

Live auctions are a great experience for sellers and buyers alike and can bring a seller great prices for equipment and machinery that they are selling. However, it can be hard to know how to get the most out of your auction. Afterall, you want to maximize your profits but how exactly do you go about doing that? Isn’t it up to what the bidders are willing to pay? Somewhat – but you can have a larger impact on bidding than you think! We’ve come up with four helpful tips that you can use to bring you higher bids during your live auction.

1. Pick a professional auctioneer (like us!)

The very first thing that you will want to do is to find a professional auctioneer to work with. While you might want to be the one on the podium yourself or have a friend or family member calling, you really should invest in a professional auctioneer. A professional auctioneer will be key for you to get the greatest returns on your assets. For starters, an auctioneer will have key insights to help you plan your auction. Their knowledge will help you decide what items you have are worth selling, determine starting bids and help with the cataloging process. They do this every day for a living and are fully aware of what it takes to conduct a live auction – allowing you to sit back and trust their expertise to bring you the highest bids. During the auction, they will be able to act as a sort of host or MC of the event. They will read the crowd to keep people engaged and bidding, bantering with bidders to draw in more bids. They know how to pull attention to your items and will do all that they can to bring you the highest final bid possible. Plus, you don’t have to worry about them getting stage fright right before the auction is about to start!

professional auctioneer

Additionally, most auctioneers and auction houses have marketing plans to help sellers working with them (we will get into this later). But best of all, most professional auction companies have a loyal following of bidders that follow any sale that the company happens to be working. This brings a wide range of bidders to your auction, and we all know that more bidders lead to more bidding which results in a higher final bid!

2. Present Your Items Well

Once you have decided exactly what you plan on selling in your auction, you will want to make sure to do everything you can to present your items to bidders in the best way possible. For starters, you want to make sure that everything you are selling is clean. Industrial machinery and agricultural equipment get put to hard work, which means that they can get dirty over time. A surefire way to increase the bidding price from the start is to give equipment a good cleaning. If a bidder is presented with dirty equipment, they will have to look through all the dust and dirt to determine their value of the item. The debris will probably hinder them from properly valuating your equipment, resulting in lower bids. However, if they are presented with newly cleaned equipment, they will be able to clearly see the value and will be prepared to offer higher bids.

An added bonus to cleaning your items is that it will help them photograph better. You will want to take pictures of all of your items from every angle for the auction catalog that will be used by bidders during the event. These images will likely be put online as well – either as part of your marketing tactics or simply on an auction site for bidders to inspect before the auction takes place. Adding descriptions to each lot alongside the photos will also provide potential bidders with more information that will make them feel more comfortable bidding on an item. And if more people are bidding, the higher your final bid will be!

3. Promote your auction

While many auction houses will have their own means of marketing your auction that doesn’t mean that you can’t do your part to get the word out! Reshare any promotional materials that your auction company puts out about your auction on your social media platforms. Create a Facebook event for people to RSVP to. Post your auction catalog and other photos to your page, highlighting big items that will draw people in. If you are a company auctioning off your items, check in with your marketing department to see if there is room in their budget to run a few ads on Facebook or elsewhere. A company can also promote an auction to their email list, sending out a newsletter with the information for the auction. If you can (and it makes sense for your auction) hang flyers around town or take out a listing in a local paper. Encourage friends and family members to get the word out as well if they are willing! You want as many people to hear about your auction as possible, because the more people who know about the auction, the more people who will likely bid.

facebook

4. Plan out the event

So, you’ve gotten to the big day! All your items are spick and span, tons of people have seen your posts and you are ready to start the auction. Before you are overcome with the fun of the auction, make sure that you have a solid plan for your event. Get together with your auctioneer to make sure you know when you can expect people to arrive for beginning inspections, what time everyone will have to be ready to start bidding, and the order in which the items will be sold. This is extremely important, as certain items should be sold at different times to bring in the largest bids possible. When there is order and clarity to an event, bidders (and you!) will feel more at ease and will be more likely bid higher. This step not only allows you to have a more peaceful auction yourself, but helps you bring in the highest bids possible!

And there you have it – four tips to increase your profits at your live auction. We wish you the best of luck! If you are looking for a professional auction company to help with your auction, contact us today! We would love to talk to you and learn about your auction needs.

Understanding The Partnership With Your Auctioneer

Understanding The Partnership With Your Auctioneer

When it’s time for you to put on a live auction, you might be searching around for the right auctioneer to get the job done. But, if you aren’t connected with an auctioneer personally, it can be kind of hard to find the right company for the job as well as knowing who you can trust to get the most out of your items. Finding the right people for the job doesn’t have to be hard, in fact it should be easy! But before you do, it’s important to understand your partnership with the auctioneer so that you can find the company best fit for the job.

Trust Is A MUST - Trust Your Auctioneer, Trust Their Judgement

Trusting your auctioneer is probably one of the most basic, yet important aspects to your relationship with the person that is handling your personal property and selling your items. If you cannot trust your auctioneer, you will always find yourself in a place of doubt and uncertainty which should never be the case if you are working with the right auction company. Trust ranges from trusting them to price something accordingly, to trusting that they are doing the best that they possibly can to get the most out of your items. Trust your auctioneer, trust their opinion, and trust their judgement. If you have questions about the worth of an item, or whether or not you should even sell an item via auction, your auctioneer is going to be your trusted resource and confidante.

The Right Auctioneer Should Make The Process Simple For You

If you are working with an auction company, and the right auctioneer, you’ll know by the ease of the process. Miedema Auctioneering knows how stressful it can be to sell your items and possessions, it’s our goal to make the entire selling process as simple and stress free as it can be. We want to take the load off of your shoulders so that you are able to sit back with confidence that you are being taken care of.

Their Experience Trumps Your Emotion

It’s crucial to be aware of the emotions that can become inadvertently involved as you sell your belongings. These items might be things that you worked really hard to afford, or items that you have fond memories using, or working on. It could be equipment that helped your business make it through a hard year of harvest. The scenarios are endless, we understand that it can be hard to put a price tag on an item that seems priceless to you, but when the time comes to part with some of your prized possessions, items, or things – your auctioneer is going to have much more experience and clarity when it comes to making decisions about prices, and parting with your items.

Your Auctioneer Is There To Help You, Not Hurt You

The last thing that is important to remember about your auctioneer is that we are here to HELP you, not harm you! It’s our job to make sure that each person and business is taken care of. We want to make sure that you get the most out of your items and that you walk away from working with us happy and content about the auction that just took place. We love having the chance to auction off interesting items, as they keep us on our toes and often bring in different bidders. The infographic below shows some of the coolest items we have been able to auction off across all of our companies!

Do you have anything unusual or particularly famous that you are interested in selling? Think about selling your items through an auction! Specialty items often stir up a buzz and bring in a large pool of interested bidders. Auctions drive up the price of your item as bidders compete to win, resulting in a higher selling price than you would most likely receive in a traditional sale. Not sure where to start when conducting an auction? We can help! We are an auction house in West Michigan and specialize in both live and online auctions. We have several sister companies that allow us to focus on more tailored industries in order to serve our bidders better. You’ve seen some of our top unique items, but there is even more that we have had the chance to sell. Contact us with any questions about our company, auction process, or anything else! We would love to set up a time to talk with you about selling your assets. Interested in learning more about the auctions listed in the infographic above?
