Remembering Shawn VanNest

Remembering Shawn VanNest

Shawn VanNest

1963-2023

On November 15, 2023, a good friend and fellow team member, Shawn Van Nest, was taken to heaven by her Lord. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family.

Shawn was a valuable member of our team for nearly 15 years and currently was serving as President of Operations for OAS, our online auction software company who gave us and many others, the opportunity to have the bidding platform we have today.

She was talented, a tremendous asset, and always a caring friend and fellow employee. We are grateful to have had the opportunity to have Shawn as part of our team and work family. We will miss her greatly.

Sincerely,

Sid & Scott Miedema (Owners)

In Loving Memory of Steve VanderZiel

IN LOVING MEMORY

STEVE VANDERZIEL

We are deeply saddened over the lost of a dear friend this weekend. Steve VanderZiel was a long time friend and customer of our family and our business. We knew Steve from church, our kids attending the same school, and through many business ventures. One of my recent conversations with Steve was asking him if he would take some time to help a friend of mine, who was going to Africa doing mission work to learn some basic welding skills. Steve didn’t hesitate but rather said "Let me know when you’re going to bring him over!" That’s just the kind of guy he was, always willing to help and give any resources he could. Steve was a great man, highly reputable, a great family man, and a sincere Christian, and we can rest in peace knowing that he is in Heaven with his Creator. Our sympathies go out to his family and friends that will all miss him very much. We know that we will. Sincerely, Scott Miedema

MESSAGE FROM VANDERZIEL MACHINERY FAMILY:

It is with deep sadness that we inform you of the passing of our husband, father, founder, and boss Steve VanderZiel. In this we trust God has a plan even though we don’t see it now and may never understand. He died doing the thing he had grown to love in his later years, driving his John Deere tractor.

For those who may not know, Steve was our namesake at VanderZiel Machinery. He founded the company after buying a package of machinery for the farm. He kept a few items and sold the rest. He was a man who believed deeply in getting his hands dirty and leading by example, he built the business on the Christian values of honesty, integrity, and respect. Steve had a gift for planning not just to step two or three but usually to step ten or fifteen. Our family has surrounded his vision and have been involved in the business since the beginning. Still to this day the family is very involved in everyday operations.

As many may know, in his later years Steve used his engineering mind to restore old tractors, in his mind the older the better. He would reverse engineer parts even when he didn’t have the original. His ingenuity and ability to solve a problem brought Vander Ziel Machinery to where we are today.
Thank you for your patience and continued support in business over the years. Serving our customers is what drives us and what we will continue to do. We appreciate you!

Visitation: Thursday 11/2 5pm to 8pm at “The Barn” 12166 52nd St. Lowell, MI 49331
Funeral: Friday, 11/3 at NorthPointe Christian, 3101 Leonard St. NE, Grand Rapids, MI 49525
In lieu of flowers please feel free but not obligated to make a donation to NorthPointe Christian Schools Foundation or the Lowell Township Steve VanderZiel Parks Fund.

With Sadness,

The VanderZiel Family

Understanding Auction Contracts

Understanding Auction Contracts

Important Terms & Considerations

In the world of auctions, the fast-paced and thrilling environment can sometimes overshadow the importance of clear and comprehensive auction contracts. These contracts are the foundation of any successful auction, whether it’s conducted live or online. At Miedema Auctioneering, we understand the significance of auction contracts and want to ensure that both our sellers and buyers are well-informed about the terms and considerations involved.

The Basics of Auction Contracts

1. Description of the Property or Assets

The contract should include a detailed description of the property or Assets being auctioned. This description should be as specific as possible to avoid any confusion or disputes later on. It’s crucial to accurately represent what is up for auction.

2. Auction Date, Time, and Location

Clearly state the date, time, and location of the auction. This ensures that both sellers and buyers are aware of when and where the auction will take place, whether it’s a live, online, or hybrid event.

3. Reserve Price

The reserve price is the minimum amount at which the seller is willing to sell the item. If the bidding does not reach this minimum, the item may not be sold. Ensure that the contract specifies whether there is a reserve price and what that amount is.

4Auctioneer’s Authority

Clearly outline the auctioneer’s authority to conduct the auction. This includes their power to accept or reject bids and settle disputes. The auctioneer plays a critical role in maintaining order during the auction.

5. Payment Terms

Specify the accepted methods of payment, such as cash, checks, credit cards, or wire transfers. Additionally, detail the timeframe within which payment must be made after the auction concludes.

6. Buyer’s Premium

Inform buyers of any applicable buyer’s premium, which is an additional fee on top of the final bid price. This fee typically goes to the auction house to cover administrative costs.

7. Seller’s Commission

Detail the seller’s commission, which is the fee charged by the auction house to the seller for their services. This should include the commission rate and how it’s calculated.

8. Withdrawal or Cancellation

Clarify the conditions under which the auction may be withdrawn or canceled, as well as any associated penalties or fees.

Why Auction Contracts Matter

Now that we’ve covered the essential elements of auction contracts, let’s explore why these contracts are so crucial in the world of auctions:

1. Legal Protection

A well-drafted auction contract provides legal protection for both the seller and the auction house. It ensures that all parties understand their rights and obligations, reducing the risk of disputes and legal challenges.

2. Transparency

Auction contracts promote transparency by clearly outlining the terms and conditions of the auction. This transparency builds trust among buyers and sellers, making them more comfortable participating in the auction.

3. Prevents Misunderstandings

Detailed descriptions of the property and the auction process help prevent misunderstandings and misinterpretations. When everyone is on the same page, the chances of disputes arising are significantly reduced.

4. Efficient Auctions

Bidding increments and other terms specified in the contract contribute to the efficiency of the auction. Buyers know how much to bid, and the auctioneer can run the event smoothly.

5. Financial Clarity

Payment terms, buyer’s premiums, and seller’s commissions provide financial clarity to all parties involved. Sellers know how much they will receive, and buyers are aware of any additional fees.

6. Risk Mitigation

Clear withdrawal and cancellation clauses help mitigate risks associated with unforeseen circumstances, such as property damage or legal issues.

Additional Considerations for Online Auctions

With the growing popularity of online auctions, it’s important to highlight some additional considerations specific to this format:

1. Online Bidding Platforms

Specify the online platform or website where the auction will take place. Ensure that bidders are familiar with the platform’s rules and procedures.

2. Inspection Period

Outline whether there will be an inspection period during which potential buyers can view the items in person or request additional information. Online bidders may have limited access to physical inspection, so this aspect is crucial.

3. Proxy Bidding

Explain the proxy bidding system, if applicable. This allows bidders to set their maximum bid in advance, and the system automatically increases their bid incrementally to maintain their winning position.

4. Closing Times

Clearly state the closing time for the auction. Online auctions often have staggered closing times for individual items, so make sure bidders understand this.

Auction contracts are the backbone of any successful auction, providing the framework for a fair and transparent process. At Miedema Auctioneering, we prioritize the clarity and fairness of our auctions, and our carefully crafted auction contracts reflect this commitment.

Whether you’re a seller looking to auction your valuable items or a buyer seeking unique treasures, understanding the terms and considerations of auction contracts is essential. It ensures that everyone involved in the auction has a positive and rewarding experience.

If you have any questions about our auction contracts or would like to learn more about our auction services, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We’re here to help you navigate the exciting world of auctions with confidence and clarity.

Farm Equipment Auctions: Maximizing Value for Farm Equipment

Farm Equipment Auctions: Maximizing Value for Farm Equipment

In the world of agriculture, the importance of staying efficient and up-to-date with the latest technology cannot be overstated. As farmers and agricultural businesses strive to optimize their operations, there often comes a time when they need to upgrade or dispose of their existing equipment. This is where farm equipment auctions come into play, offering an efficient and cost-effective way to buy or sell agricultural assets. In this blog, we will explore the world of farm equipment auctions and how they can help you maximize the value of your agricultural assets.

Streamlined Asset Liquidation

One of the primary reasons farmers and agricultural businesses turn to auctions is the efficiency they offer in liquidating/selling equipment. When it’s time to upgrade or downsize, waiting for individual buyers can be a time-consuming process. Farm equipment auctions, on the other hand, bring together a large pool of potential buyers in one place, often online, leading to quicker sales and faster cash flow.

Competitive Bidding

Farm equipment auctions create a competitive environment that could increase the price of your assets. When multiple bidders are interested in the same item, they are more likely to bid higher to secure the equipment. This competitive dynamic ensures that you receive fair market value for your agricultural assets.

Diverse Buyer Base

Farm equipment auctions attract a wide range of buyers, from individual farmers looking for a single piece of equipment to dealers and contractors seeking to expand their inventory. This diversity in the buyer base can lead to higher demand for your equipment, potentially increasing the final selling price.

Expert Auctioneers

Choosing the right auctioneer is crucial to the success of your farm equipment auction. Miedema Auctioneering, a trusted name in the industry, specializes in agricultural auctions and has a proven track record of helping clients maximize the value of their assets. With their expertise and experience, you can be confident that your equipment will be in good hands.

Understanding Auction Terminology: A Glossary for Bidders and Sellers

Understanding Auction Terminology: A Glossary for Bidders and Sellers

Auctions have been an integral part of the global marketplace for centuries, providing a dynamic platform for buyers and sellers to engage in the trade of various goods and assets. Whether it’s antiques, real estate, art, vehicles, or collectibles, auctions offer an exciting and efficient way to conduct transactions. However, for newcomers and even seasoned participants, the language used in the auction world can be overwhelming. To empower bidders and sellers with confidence, we present a comprehensive glossary of auction terminology, brought to you by Miedema Auctioneering, Inc., a leading Live & Online Auction company. Join us in this blog: Understanding Auction Terminology: A Glossary for Bidders and Sellers.

Auctioneer

The auctioneer is the individual who leads the auction event, guiding the bidding process and facilitating the sale. Auctioneers are skilled professionals responsible for setting the pace, announcing bids, and ensuring a fair and transparent auction experience.

Hammer Price

The hammer price refers to the final bid amount at which the auctioneer strikes the gavel, signifying the acceptance of the highest offer and concluding the bidding process. Today, many auctioneer’s don’t use an actual gavel during a live auction, instead they say “SOLD” and the buyer shows their bidder card and the auctioneer will repeat the buyer number to signify the end of that auction lot.

Buyer's Premium

The buyer’s premium is an additional fee charged to the winning bidder on top of the hammer price. This fee is usually a percentage of the final bid and serves as a commission for the auction house.

Reserve Auction vs. No Reserve (Absolute) Auction

In a reserve auction, the sale is subject to the seller’s approval, as the final bid must meet or exceed the reserve price. On the other hand, an absolute auction is one where the item is sold to the highest bidder, regardless of the final bid amount.

Bid Increments

Bid increments are predetermined price steps by which bids must increase during the auction. They ensure that bids are raised in an organized manner and prevent minimal bid increases.

Absentee Bidding

Also known as a proxy bid, absentee bidding allows individuals to place bids on items before the live auction begins. The auction house will then represent the bidder during the event, bidding on their behalf up to their specified maximum bid. Not all auction companies provide this option, make sure to contact your auctioneer prior to the auction to make appropriate arrangements.

Live Auction vs. Online Auction

A live auction takes place in a physical location, with bidders raising their paddles or hands to make bids. In contrast, an online auction occurs on a online platform, where participants can bid remotely through a secure website. Miedema Auctioneering offers both options, live & online bidding at the same event. Whether you have equipment or real estate, Miedema Auctioneeirng has the technology and ability to capitalize both marketplaces, live and online.

As is, Where Is

Items sold “as is, where is” are auctioned without any warranties or guarantees. Buyers are responsible for inspecting the items themselves and accepting them in their current condition.

Auction Catalog

The auction catalog is a comprehensive list of all items up for bidding in a particular auction. It contains detailed descriptions and photographs of each item, providing bidders with essential information. This also helps bidder know which lot the auctioneer is on so they know when the lot or lots they are interested will be sold.

Bidder Registration

Before participating in an auction, bidders are required to register with the auction house. This process involves providing identification and agreeing to the terms and conditions of the auction. Typically, this process if very fast. Most auction companies require your license number and a good contact number. That’s it! However, every auction company is different, make sure to confirm there are no other requirements before arriving at the auction location.

Opening Bid

The opening bid is the initial bid made by the auctioneer to kickstart the bidding process. Bidders then raise their bidder card in response to the opening bid.

Ringmen

Ringmen, also known as Auction Ringmen, are experienced assistants who work alongside the auctioneer during live auctions. They play a crucial role in the auction process, spotting bids from bidders throughout the venue and communicating them to the auctioneer. Ringmen are trained to engage with the audience, encourage bidding, and ensure that no bids are overlooked, contributing to the lively and dynamic atmosphere of a live auction.

Understanding auction terminology is crucial for both bidders and sellers to navigate the auction world with confidence and success. Whether you’re a seasoned participant or a first-time auction-goer, familiarizing yourself with these key terms will enable you to make informed decisions during the bidding process. At Miedema Auctioneering, Inc., we are committed to providing transparent and exciting auction experiences for all our clients.

Exploring Auction Formats: Live, Online, and Simulcast Auctions with Miedema Auctioneering

When it comes to buying or selling valuable assets, auctions have long been the go-to method for achieving fair market value. Auctions provide a transparent and efficient way to connect buyers and sellers, and they come in various formats to accommodate different needs. In this blog post, we will explore three popular auction formats: live auctions, online auctions, and simulcast auctions.

Miedema Auctioneering, Inc. is a renowned auction company that has been serving clients for nearly 40 years. With their expertise and experience, they have become a trusted name in the auction industry throughout the country, offering a wide range of auction formats to suit different requirements and needs.

Live Auctions: Live auctions are the traditional format that most people envision when they think of auctions. They take place in a physical location, typically an auction house, designated venue or seller location, where bidders gather in one place to participate in the bidding process. Miedema Auctioneering conducts numerous live auctions throughout the year, attracting a diverse group of buyers and sellers.

One of the primary advantages of live auctions is the vibrant atmosphere they create. The competitive nature of live bidding can be exciting, as participants engage in fast-paced bidding wars to secure the item they desire.

Live Crowd at Equipment Live Auction

Online Auctions: In recent years, the popularity of online auctions has soared, thanks to advancements in technology and the widespread availability of internet access. Online auctions, as the name suggests, take place entirely in a digital environment. Participants can bid on items from the comfort of their own homes or offices, using computers or mobile devices. Miedema Auctioneering offers a user-friendly online auction platform that streamlines the bidding process and ensures a seamless experience for all participants.

Online auctions provide several advantages, including convenience and accessibility. Bidders can participate from anywhere in the world, eliminating geographical barriers and expanding the pool of potential buyers. Additionally, online auctions often have longer bidding periods, allowing bidders to carefully consider their options and place bids at their own pace.

Simulcast Auctions: Simulcast auctions combine the best aspects of live and online auctions, creating a hybrid format that caters to a broader audience. In a Miedema Auctioneering, Inc. simulcast auction, bidders have the option to participate either in person at the auction site or online through a virtual bidding platform. Miedema Auctioneering specializes in simulcast auctions, offering a seamless integration between the physical and digital auction experiences.

Simulcast auctions provide the flexibility of online bidding while maintaining the excitement of live auctions. Bidders who are unable to attend the auction in person can still participate and compete against others in real-time, ensuring a level playing field for all participants. This format is particularly beneficial for those who prefer the convenience of online bidding but still value the interactive nature of live auctions.

Auctioneer

Miedema Auctioneering’s commitment to innovation and adaptability has allowed them to excel in all three auction formats. Whether you prefer the energetic ambiance of live auctions, the convenience of online bidding, or the flexibility of simulcast auctions, Miedema Auctioneering has the expertise and technology to meet your auction needs.

In conclusion, auctions are a powerful tool for buying and selling assets, and Miedema Auctioneering offers a range of formats to cater to diverse preferences. Live auctions provide a dynamic and immersive experience, while online auctions offer convenience and accessibility. Simulcast auctions seamlessly merge the best of both worlds.
