Auctions and Marketing

Auctions and Marketing

At Miedema Auctioneering, we know that strategic promotion is one of the most important factors in creating excitement, attracting the right buyers, and ultimately driving strong results for our sellers. Behind every successful sale is a carefully planned marketing strategy designed to put each auction in front of the audiences that matter most.

Marketing Sets the Stage for Buyer Confidence

When potential bidders browse an auction, they aren’t just looking for items, they’re looking for information they can trust. Quality photos, clear descriptions, and detailed listings are often the difference between a casual glance and an active bid.
Our team puts extensive effort into presenting each asset professionally, so buyers feel confident bidding, whether they’re attending an in-person auction or participating online.

Reaching the Right Buyers, Not Just More Buyers

Effective auction marketing isn’t about broadcasting to the largest audience possible – it’s about targeting the right one.
Miedema Auctioneering uses a mix of traditional and digital marketing tools to make sure each auction reaches the people most likely to buy. That includes email campaigns, social media promotion, industry-specific advertising, local outreach, and tailored marketing for specialty items. Every asset has a unique audience, and our job is to find it.

The Power of Storytelling in Auction Promotion

Some of the most successful auctions are the ones with a story behind them: the family farm passing to the next generation, the retirement of a long-standing local business, or the sale of a unique personal estate.
Miedema Auctioneering uses storytelling to connect with buyers on a deeper level. Sharing the history, purpose, and value of items brings authenticity to the auction and creates a personal connection that motivates bidders to participate.

Digital Marketing Drives Modern Auction Success

With more buyers browsing auctions from their phones and computers, online visibility is essential.
Our digital marketing strategy includes:

  • Email updates to thousands of targeted bidders
  • Social media campaigns showcasing standout items
  • Website listings optimized for search
  • Online advertising that reaches specific industries and buyer groups

These tools help bring bidders directly to the auction and increase competition, leading to stronger results for sellers.

Building Trust Through Branding and Reputation

At Miedema Auctioneering, our name carries decades of credibility. When buyers see our brand on an auction, they know they can expect transparency, professionalism, and a positive experience. That trust is a powerful part of our marketing.
Sellers benefit from the reputation we’ve built, and buyers know they’re participating in a well-run auction backed by a company that stands behind its process.

When Marketing and Auctioneering Work Together

Marketing and auctioneering are inseparable. One drives attention; the other turns that attention into results.
From the initial announcement to the final bid, our team works to make sure every auction has the exposure and momentum it needs to succeed. Whether it’s a farm retirement, equipment sale, charity event, or estate auction, the right marketing can make all the difference.

Looking Ahead

As auction technology evolves, so does the way we market. Miedema Auctioneering continues to refine its approach with new digital tools, better buyer insights, and creative strategies that maximize visibility. What never changes is our commitment to delivering exceptional results for every client.

Auction Terms Explained

Auction Terms Explained: A Simple Guide for Buyers & Sellers

If you’re new to the auction world, or simply want to brush up on the lingo, you may notice that auctions come with their own vocabulary. At Miedema Auctioneering, we work hard to make every buying and selling experience straightforward, transparent, and stress-free. This guide breaks down the most common auction terms you’ll see on our website, in our catalogs, or at one of our live auctions.

Whether you’re bidding for the first time or managing your hundredth sale, understanding these terms will help you feel confident and prepared.

Absolute Auction

An auction where the property sells to the highest bidder – no minimums, no reserves. Once bidding starts, the item will sell regardless of price.

Reserve Auction

A reserve auction means the seller has set a minimum price they are willing to accept. If bidding doesn’t reach that number, the item may not sell.

Buyer’s Premium

An additional fee added to the winning bid.
For example, if you win an item at $1,000 with a 10% buyer’s premium, your total becomes $1,100.
This fee helps cover auction administration, marketing, and operational costs.

Bid Increments

The minimum amount by which a bid must increase.
For example, bids may increase by $25, $50, or more as the price rises. Omitting bid increments ensures a smooth, fair bidding process.

Ringman

Also known as a bid spotter, the ringman assists the auctioneer in spotting bids during a live auction. They communicate bidder interest quickly so the auctioneer can keep the sale moving.

Soft Close

A common feature in online auctions. If a bid comes in during the final moments of an item’s closing time, the clock extends by a set number of minutes. This ensures all bidders have a fair chance to respond, similar to a live auction’s fast-paced atmosphere.

Staggered Closing

Items don’t all close at once. Instead, they close in small batches, usually separated by a few minutes. This gives bidders time to follow multiple items without feeling rushed.

AS-IS / Where-Is

All items are sold without guarantees or warranties, and buyers are responsible for inspecting items before bidding. “Where-is” means the item must be picked up from its current location.

Preview / Inspection

A scheduled time when bidders can view items in person. At Miedema Auctioneering, we highly recommend attending previews, especially for equipment, vehicles, and high-value assets.

Terms & Conditions

Each auction has its own set of rules regarding payment, pickup, bidding eligibility, and more. Buyers should always read the T&Cs before placing their first bid.

Why These Terms Matter

Understanding these terms helps buyers bid with confidence and ensures sellers know what to expect during their auction. Miedema Auctioneering prides itself on clear communication and industry-leading professionalism, so whether you’re selling a fleet of equipment or bidding on your next project tool, we’re here to make the process easy.

Sid Miedema Inducted into the National Auction Association Hall of Fame

Sid Miedema Inducted into the National Auction Association Hall of Fame

BYRON CENTER, MI — With four decades of experience and leadership in the auction industry, Sid Miedema has been officially inducted into the National Auction Association Hall of Fame—an honor that recognizes his outstanding contributions to the profession and his impact across the country.

Sid entered the industry in 1984, and since then, he has become one of the most respected voices in the auction world. As the founder of Miedema Asset Management Group, he’s helped shape how auctions are done today. Starting with live, in-person events and evolving into a nationally recognized online auction business, Sid was one of the early adopters of digital bidding—developing trademarked software in 2000 and setting a new standard for the industry.

He has sold assets in nearly every industry, and under his leadership, Miedema Asset Management Group has grown into nine companies with over 150 employees and has earned national attention.

Sid’s influence extends well beyond business operations. He’s been an active member of the NAA for 39 years, serving on the NAA Foundation Board, including as President, earning his CAI designation, attending the annual Conference & Show for over 30 years, and speaking at several national events. He’s participated in CAI Next and attended summits on real estate, digital auctions, and more—always investing in professional growth and innovation.

Within his own Michigan Auctioneer’s Association, Sid’s leadership is just as strong. He served as President of the MAA in 1992, won the state Bid Calling Championship in 1995, and was inducted into the MAA Hall of Fame in 2005.

Community involvement is also a key part of Sid’s story. He’s served as an elder in his church, led missionary efforts, held leadership positions in the Michigan Horse Pulling Association, served on school boards and community committees, and helped raise funds for hundreds of organizations. His contributions have been formally recognized by the State of Michigan.

His son, Jordan Miedema, sums it up well:

“My dad has always said that being honest and treating people with respect is more important than chasing profit. That mindset has shaped our company and how we operate. He’s not just part of this industry—he’s helped define it.”

Sid’s induction into the NAA Hall of Fame isn’t just a recognition of his past—it’s a marker of his ongoing influence on the auction profession. He continues to serve, mentor, and innovate, leaving a legacy that’s still very much in motion.

The Evolution of Auctioneering

The Evolution of Auctioneering

Auctioneering has a rich history, tracing back to ancient civilizations where goods were sold to the highest bidder in marketplaces. The traditional auction, characterized by lively bidding, energetic auctioneers, and a palpable sense of competition, has been a staple of commerce for centuries. However, the digital age has ushered in a transformative shift, evolving the auction process from the gavel to the keyboard.

Traditional Auctioneering: The Art of the Auctioneer

In its classic form, auctioneering is an art. Auctioneers possess a unique blend of charisma and quick-thinking that engages bidders and drives up prices. From charity events to high-stakes art sales, the atmosphere is electric, with bidders raising paddles in a dance of competition. The traditional model relies heavily on the physical presence of participants, creating a community experience that fosters excitement and anticipation.

The Digital Shift: Online Auction Platforms

The rise of the internet has revolutionized how auctions are conducted. Online platforms like Repocast or OrbitBid have democratized the process, allowing anyone with an internet connection to participate in auctions from anywhere in the world. This accessibility has broadened the audience, attracting new buyers who may have never engaged with traditional auctions.

Online auctions utilize technology to streamline the bidding process. Automatic bidding, real-time updates, and comprehensive catalogs enhance the user experience, making it easier for participants to place bids and track items of interest. The convenience of 24/7 access has turned auctioneering into a global affair, enabling sellers to reach potential buyers beyond geographical constraints.

Hybrid: The Best of Both Worlds

As technology continues to evolve, hybrid auction models are emerging, combining the excitement of live auctions with the convenience of online platforms. Events like live-streamed auctions allow remote bidders to engage in real-time, witnessing the action while participating from the comfort of their homes. This fusion not only preserves the traditional auction experience but also broadens participation, making auctions more inclusive.

Auctioneering has come a long way from its traditional roots. While the thrill of the live auction remains unmatched, online platforms and hybrid models are reshaping the landscape, making auctions more accessible and engaging than ever before. As technology continues to advance, the auction industry will undoubtedly evolve, blending tradition with innovation in exciting new ways. Whether you’re a seasoned bidder or a curious newcomer, the world of auctions offers a dynamic marketplace that’s worth exploring.
